Shropshire Council steps up crackdown on dog fouling

Shropshire Council has stepped up its enforcement patrols of public areas across the county following increased reports from local people of owners not clearing up after their dogs. 

Dog owners are required by law to clean up after their dog; failure to do so can result in a fixed penalty notice being issued, or possible prosecution. 

Dog waste should be disposed of in the appropriate manner, either by using the council dog or litter bins, or by taking it home and putting it in the bin. 

Martin Bennett, Shropshire Council’s deputy Cabinet member, said:

“Dog fouling is a big concern for Shropshire residents, who keep asking us to do more about it. 

“Apart from the health concerns, dog mess is also a real nuisance; it makes the area look untidy, and it unfairly gives all those responsible dog owners a bad name. 

“As well as upping our patrols, we are calling for residents to keep their eyes peeled for anyone who repeatedly lets their dog foul, noting down the times and places where this takes place.  This will enable us to target the worst areas.” 

The dog warden has also written to all schools offering to go into the school to speak to the children about dog fouling, and also hoping that they will take the message home.
