Time for a spring clean
Ahead of the official start of Spring – the astronomical Spring officially starts tomorrow, Tuesday 20 March 2012 – Shropshire Council and their contractor Veolia Environmental Services (UK) Ltd are urging residents who want to declutter to think about recycling as part of their spring clean.
Spring is traditionally a time of ‘out with the old and in with the new’ and this may generate some extra waste. But many people are still not aware that the majority of household waste can be recycled. In fact, people can recycle 30 different types of material at their local Household Recycling Centre.
From broken electrical items like TVs and washing machines which can be repaired and reused to old wooden furniture which can be shredded down and recycled into new chipboard or garden waste which can be composted to create farmland soil improver and unwanted metal tools gathering dust in the shed, which could be melted down as scrap metal as used to make new steel cans.
Even old bottles of engine oil which might be cluttering up the garage can be recycled to make industrial fuel. The possibilities are endless!
Councillor Mike Owen, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for waste and recycling, said:
“If you’re having a clearout or spring cleaning this year, you may generate some extra waste. Before you bin it, think about whether or not it could be reused or recycled instead.
“We provide five dedicated Household Recycling Centre facilities in Shropshire where you can recycle thirty different types of material. There is also a wide range of charity shops and local furniture reuse schemes who can accept donations of unwanted items.”
