New research shedding light on the history of Church Stretton will be revealed at a history day of talks and walks on Saturday 24 March 2012 at Silvester Horne Institute.

The day is organised by the Friends of Shropshire Archives and Church Stretton Area Local History Group.

Church Stretton has a long history and the day will explore both the geology and history of the area.

It will include talks on various aspects of its history, including education and the development of tourism, led by local experts and specialists, and there will be guided walks around the town and a visit to the church.

The day costs £5 for members of the Friends of Shropshire Archives and Church Stretton Area Local History Group, and £10 for non-members.

For further details and to book a place please contact Mrs Pat Kiernan on 01952 252814 or visit www.friendsofshropshirearchives.org.uk.

Councillor Mike Owen, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for economic growth and prosperity, said:

“This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a day finding out about the long history of Church Stretton and to learn more about its inhabitants.  This is a fascinating area of Shropshire that deserves to be celebrated.”
