Events to tell all about Shropshire heritage project
People interested in Shropshire’s heritage are being invited to take part in a project that aims to help make the county’s history more accessible to all – and they can find out more at a series of events being held in March 2012.
The Heritage Lottery funded “Volunteering for Shropshire’s Heritage” project is run by Shropshire Council’s museums and archives service.
Members of the team will be out and about around the county in March carrying out cataloguing, conservation, digitisation, research and promotional activities. They also want to talk to people about the work they will be doing over the next three years as part of the project, and are holding four events in Shrewsbury and Ludlow at which people can learn more and find out how to get involved.
John Benson, project manager, said:
“We want to talk to as many people as we can about the project so that we can recruit as wide-ranging a group of volunteers from as many different places as possible. So this is an opportunity for anyone interested in Shropshire’s astonishingly rich and varied heritage to get involved with collections as diverse as photographs, 16th century militia lists, fossils and butterflies! If you’d like to discover more, do please come along and meet us.”
People can meet the team and find out more about the project at:
• Ludlow Library & Museum Resource Centre, 7-9 Parkway, Ludlow. Friday 2 March 2012 – 6pm to 7.30pm, and Monday 12 March 2012 – 2pm to 4pm.
• Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery, Rowley’s House, Barker Street, Shrewsbury. Thursday 22 March 2012 – 2pm to 4.30pm.
• Shrewsbury Library, Castle Gates, Shrewsbury. Tuesday 27 March 2012 – 5pm – 7.30pm. This event will include a talk from well-known Shrewsbury local historian and photographer David Trumper and the event is also part of part of a programme of national events produced as part of the new BBC television series Britain’s First Photo Album.
Councillor Mike Owen, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for economic growth and prosperity, said:
“Heritage is about people and it’s very important that this project connects with people in as many different ways as possible. So we’d love to hear from people with an interest in Shropshire’s heritage to explore ways in which we might work together.
“Volunteering for Shropshire’s Heritage is all about a sense of place, community identity and the people who live in that place and are part of that community, so we very much hope that people will come along to these events in Ludlow and Shrewsbury and talk to us.”
