Work to solve drainage problems in Ludlow

New gully channels will be installed in Ludlow’s Market Square to solve ongoing drainage problems which have been plaguing local businesses and shoppers.

The drainage channels were recently cleaned out in an attempt to solve the drainage problems, but that work uncovered further problems with the gully channels.

The channels had deteriorated and worn away, meaning they could no longer support the grids that sit on top of them.

Shropshire Council is now working with a local firm to make some new galvanised gully channels, which will be more hard-wearing and will make the drainage system in Market Square much more efficient.

It is expected to take about three weeks for the new channels to be built and installed.

Councillor Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for transport and highways, said:

“We regularly clean out drainage gullies to ensure they are working well, but in this case it has transpired that a more long-term solution was needed.  We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and can assure local residents and businesses that the new channels will be installed as soon as possible.”

Councillor Rosanna Taylor-Smith, local councillor for Ludlow North, added:

“We have tried to get these gully channels replaced as quickly as we can, and apologise to residents and businesses in the Market Square area for the delay.  I hope the channels will be installed within the next month at the latest.”
