Church Stretton enhancement scheme will not go ahead
A scheme to enhance Church Stretton’s High Street will not go ahead, after it was rejected at yesterday’s (Tuesday 3 January 2012) planning committee meeting held in Bridgnorth.
The scheme, which was originally approved at South Planning Committee in October 2011, included proposals to widen the pavement, take away approximately eight parking spaces and retain two way traffic movement in the High Street.
It was considered again at yesterday’s committee, following concerns concerns raised during the formal consultation period.
Councillor Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for transport, said:
“Despite a great deal of support from many local people, the scheme also attracted strong views about whether or not we should go ahead with any change. Unfortunately, because of this, the committee decided to reject the scheme.”
David Evans, a Shropshire Councillor for Church Stretton and Craven Arms, said:
“A scheme that was put forward to enhance Church Stretton’s High Street was rejected by the South Planning Committee because of the opposition during the final part of the consultation.
“I know that this has caused problems in the town, but I hope that the traders and the people of Church Stretton will work together with the town council and Shropshire Council for the future of the town.”
