Volunteers needed for new home library service in Church Stretton

Church Stretton Library is calling for volunteers to help with a new service which will take the library to the local community. 

The library hopes to start the free home library service next year (2012). 

The service, which will be delivered by volunteers with help from library staff, will be available to anyone who is unable to use the library because they have a disability, long-term illness or caring responsibilities which make it difficult for them to get out. 

The library is inviting people who want to find out more about volunteering to a festive coffee morning and tea afternoon on Tuesday 13 December 2011 from 10am until 12pm and from 2.30pm until 3.30pm. 

Councillor Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for libraries, said:

“This is an excellent service which can deliver books, compact discs, DVDs and talking books to members of the community who find it difficult to get to their local library. 

“Volunteers are an integral part of this.  So, if you are fairly fit, enjoy reading and like meeting people and also have a few hours a month free, then being a volunteer with the home library service could be for you.” 

David Evans, a Shropshire Councillor for Church Stretton and Craven Arms, said:

“I think this will be a wonderful service to a lot of people with a disability and/or long-term illness; it is also another way of contact with the local community.  I ask people to support this service, and let’s hope that this will spread to other areas.”
