Love food hate waste this Christmas

The average Shropshire household will splash out £133.70 on food for the Christmas table, according to a new national survey.

However, the same survey also discovered that 56% of householders admit they will throw away up to 30% of that extra Christmas food.  Across the whole of the UK that adds up to around £600 million worth of food being thrown into the bin just from Christmas dinners alone.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.  Simple things like just making a shopping list, checking the cupboards and fridge, and planning meals before going shopping, can help save food and money in the run up to Christmas.

When the festive season comes people often find themselves catering for extra people.  A great tip is to use the free Christmas dinner or party portion calculator at lovefoodhatewaste.com to remove the guess work when it comes to portions.

Councillor Mike Owen, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for waste and recycling, said:

“Everyone loves Christmas and wants to get into the spirit of things with special treats.  But we could all do with some extra cash in our pockets at this time of year, so visit www.lovefoodhatewaste.com to find out how you could save money and the environment by wasting less food.”

Did you know ? We collectively chuck out 9,300 tonnes of Brussels sprouts in the UK every Christmas.
