First cardboard recycling banks installed around the county

Changes to the national compost standard have meant that compost producers used by Shropshire Council’s waste contractor Veolia can no longer accept cardboard mixed with garden waste, in a move to improve the quality of compost.

The new quality standard has meant that since 28 November 2011, residents in the Shropshire Council area have been unable to put cardboard in their garden waste bin or sack.

To help Shropshire residents continue to recycle cardboard, a number of new cardboard recycling banks are being installed across the county.  Some are already in place and these are located at:

  • Severn Centre in Highley
  • Oswald Road Car Park (opposite Morrisons supermarket) in Oswestry
  • Church Street Car Park in Prees
  • Coder Road Recycling Point in Ludlow
  • Smithfield Car Park in Ludlow
  • Morrisons supermarket in Harlescott, Shrewsbury
  • Sainsbury’s supermarket on Meole Brace Retail Park in Shrewsbury

Additional cardboard recycling banks will be installed in the following locations during December 2011:

  • Aston Street Car Park in Shifnal
  • Callow Community Centre in Minsterley
  • High Street Car Park in Wem
  • Innage Lane Car Park in Bridgnorth
  • Lacon Childe School in Cleobury Mortimer
  • Morrisons supermarket in Market Drayton
  • The Stadium opposite RAF Station in Cosford
  • Talbot Street Car Park in Ellesmere

Councillor Mike Owen, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for waste and recycling, said:

“It’s great that these new cardboard recycling banks are being installed, with more to follow once agreements are finalised.

“We are disappointed that we’ve had to make changes to the way we collect cardboard.  However, as well as installing additional cardboard recycling banks, we are continuing to work with our waste contractor Veolia to explore ways to collect cardboard from the kerbside in the future.”

Residents can also take cardboard to any one of the five Household Recycling Centres around the county, these are located at:

  • Barnsley Lane in Bridgnorth
  • Battlefield Enterprise Park in Shrewsbury
  • Long Lane Industrial Estate in Craven Arms
  • Mile Oak Industrial Estate in Oswestry
  • Waymills Civic Park in Whitchurch

The council’s garden waste kerbside collection service receives approximately 38,000 tonnes every year from the collection of garden waste, cardboard and in some areas food waste from homes across the county.  Cardboard represents around 4,000 tonnes of this total.
