Rapping robot to visit Shropshire schools

Related topics: Community

Schoolpupils across Shropshire will be learning more about recycling next week when ‘Recycler’ the rapping robot tours Shropshire schools.

From Monday 14 November 2011 to Thursday 17 November 2011, Recycler will be bringing recycling to life through his interactive show at primary schools throughout Shropshire.

The talking robot delivers an action-packed, multimedia assembly.  Recycler sings, moves, lights up and interacts with pupils to teach them how to reduce, reuse and recycle. Recycler has already reached more than two million children across the UK in the 16 years that he has been visiting schools.

The show tells pupils and teachers all about the three Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle – and the robot really does do a rap as part of the performance.

Throughout the performance, Recycler shows children how they can reduce their waste and put the three Rs into practice at home and at school; for example, by making full use of local recycling schemes.  This is all helping to reduce the environmental and financial burden of sending waste to landfill.

Recycler has been widely praised for his fun and memorable performances to schoolpupils, and has even won a ‘green’ Blue Peter badge for his efforts.

Councillor Mike Owen, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for local environment, economy and waste, said:

“We’ve found that children are good at encouraging their family to recycle, and a visit from Recycler the Robot is a fun way to ensure children understand about the importance of reducing the amount of waste we produce, reusing items, and recycling.”

“On average every household in Shropshire throws away over one tonne of waste each year and, although more than half is now recycled, it would be better to produce less waste in the first place.  Pupils will learn from Recycler how important it is to reduce waste, at home and at school.”

Recycler the Robot is being brought to Shropshire by Shropshire Council’s waste management team, in partnership with the national recycling charity Waste Watch.
