Dads, grandads and male carers of children under five and their siblings in the Wem area are invited to a special event this Saturday 8 October 2011.

The free event, organised by Shropshire Council’s Sure Start children’s centre services, will be held at Wem Children’s Centre, St Peters CofE Primary School, Shrubbery Gardens, Wem from 10am-12pm.

The theme of the event is ‘Princes and Princesses’ where children can build a castle, make crowns, shields and puppets.  Children can also explore the wide variety of toys and activities available at the children’s centre both indoors and outdoors.

Families can also find out about what else is on offer for young children in their local area and get information and advice from children’s centre support workers.

Councillor Ann Hartley, Cabinet member for health and well-being said,

“This is a great opportunity to give dads, male carers and even granddads, who don’t usually attend our children centre services Stay and Play sessions during the week, an opportunity to take part in similar activities at a weekend.  I hope many will come along and join in the fun.”

A local Shropshire Councillor for Wem, Chris Mellings, said:

“As a father of three this is a fantastic opportunity to share some quality creative time with our children and others.  With the pressures of the working week sometimes it is difficult to manage some quality time, and this session gives us chance to spend time having creative fun.  It is also a good opportunity for children to meet and learn with others and for dads, grandads and male carers to meet, share experiences and see what Wem children’s centre has to offer.  I am sure everyone will have a great time!”

A local Shropshire Councillor for Wem, Pauline Dee, said:

“I think this is a wonderful chance for dads to be able to bond with their children and have some fun at the same time.  As a mother of four and grandmother to eight, I know how much children appreciate this kind of interaction and I am sure it is an event that they will all want to repeat in the very near future.”

The dads events are planned to take place once a term at the centre.
