Cycle Shrewsbury’s Bike Polo event is a first for Shropshire
As part of ‘Love Your Bike Month’, Shropshire will hold its first Bike Polo event on Wednesday 26 October 2011 at Greenhous Meadow Stadium, Shrewsbury Town FC.
The free event starts at 10am with a guided ride from The Quarry to our event. As well as Bike Polo you can try out new bikes, get a free bike safety check by Dr Bike, and have a go at making your own pedal-powered smoothie on our ‘Smoothie’ bike.
Bike Polo is an urban team sport, similar to traditional polo, except that players ride bicycles instead of horses, using mallets to strike a small ball into a goal. All are welcome on the day, anyone can take part in the polo, and no experience is required.
The day is part of the wider Love Your Bike Month organised by Cycle Shrewsbury, comprising of a range of free cycling events and activities in and around Shrewsbury, Ludlow and Oswestry throughout October 2011.
Cycle Shrewsbury is Shropshire Council’s popular campaign to get people cycling more often and loving your bike.
Councillor Simon Jones, Cabinet member for transport, said:
“We are glad to be bringing this exciting sport to Shropshire as part of Love Your Bike Month, which sees a variety of free events across the county open to all ages and abilities.
“Shrewsbury has seen a rise of 9% in cycling since the start of the Cycle Shrewsbury campaign, and we hope this success can continue. In a community where more people cycle, everyone benefits from better air quality, less traffic congestion and, importantly, better health.”
