A journey in time treasure hunt in Oswestry
Oswestry Library is inviting people to join in the hunt to find 48 date plaques in various streets and pathways across the town.
The date plaques were photographed in January 2011 by local photographer Myk Briggs as part of a project to chart a historical journey around the town. A total of 48 photos of plaques dated between 1407 and 2008 were chosen from nearly 100 to form a 100ft banner, which is currently on display in Oswestry Library.
To enter the treasure hunt people can either download an entry form from Myk Briggs’ website (www.myk.org.uk) or collect one from Oswestry Library, along with the competition terms. There is an entrance fee of £1.50. There is also a chance to buy a postcard version of the 100ft photo.
The competition will run until 4pm on Monday 28 November 2011. All correct entries will then be entered into a draw on Wednesday 30 November 2011 and the winner will be notified after the draw.
The prize for the winning correct entry is a 16” by 12” canvas print of ‘a journey in time’ produced by local firm Replicacolour, who also printed the original 100ft photo.
Councillor Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for libraries, said:
“This treasure hunt offers you a chance to get out and about in the fresh air to discover many different parts of the town.
“I’d like to encourage as many people as possible to join in the fun.”
Martin Bennett, Shropshire Councillor for Oswestry East, said:
“This is an exciting way to take a look at the town with fresh eyes, and spot the details that so often go unnoticed. There are a number of plaques which don’t feature in the competition, so there may be scope for another hunt for the hidden treasures of Oswestry’s past, sometime in the future!”
All plaques can be found within 1km of the Willow Gallery/Oswestry Library.
