Roundabout improvements in Shrewsbury

Related topics: Community

Work to resurface two busy roundabouts in Shrewsbury will start later this month (Monday 15 August 2011).

The roundabout by the health and fitness centre Welti, and Sundorne Roundabout, will undergo many improvements such as resurfacing, new kerbs and drainage work over nine weeks.

This work will take place in two phases.

Phase one will involve improvements to the roundabout near Welti (the junction of Featherbed Lane with Sundorne Road) from 15 to 26 August 2011.

Kerbing works will take place during the day within the first week, using narrow traffic lanes.  When these works are complete, the road will be resurfaced.

Unfortunately, this can only be safely undertaken with a full road closure.  However, to minimise disruption to residents, business and motorists, this will take place after 7pm when the roads are less busy, with the noisiest work being completed by 11pm each night.

Phase two will involve improvements to Sundorne Roundabout (the junction of Sundorne Road with the A49) from 30 August to 17 October 2011.

The first four weeks of this phase will take place using narrow traffic lanes.  During this phase, two weeks work will require a closure of the B5062 Westbound from the Uffington junction from 7pm until 6am each night.

During the final week of the work, the Sundorne Road link between the roundabout near Welti, Sundorne Roundabout and the B5062 to the Uffington Junction both directions will be closed.  The closures will be from 7pm until 6am each night.

Councillor Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for transport, said:

“This essential work is being done as part of our drive to keep the county moving.  It’s vital that we keep investing in our roads, especially as a number of them suffered damage caused by last winter’s severe weather.

“We understand that these works may cause some inconvenience.  However, we have carefully planned them so that they cause as little disruption as possible to residents, businesses and motorists.”

Karen Burgoyne, Shropshire Councillor for Sundorne, said:

“I’m sure that Sundorne residents, despite the initial inconvenience, will appreciate the greater safety and condition of the roads, as well as the improved drainage afforded by these necessary roadworks, once complete.”

Signed diversions will be in place during each road closure and access to people’s homes will remain available throughout the work.

During the work, the council is encouraging people to visit the businesses along this route as all of them will remain open as usual.

The work will be undertaken on behalf of Shropshire Council by contractors Alun Griffiths Contracting and their engineering consultants Mouchel.
