Shrewsbury Sports Village celebrates its most successful year yet

Shrewsbury Sports Village is celebrating after welcoming a record number of visitors though its doors over the last year, making it the most successful year since it opened in 2006.

A total of 210,000 people have visited the centre during this time to take part in the huge range of activities on offer such as football, bowls and trampolining. This is an increase of over 25,000 people compared with the year before.

However, despite these impressive numbers, the centre is not standing still. It has recently opened a new Aspire Fitness Suite, extended the play park and introduced a regular comedy club – all of which have been greatly welcomed.

It has also just taken on the management of the Sundorne Games Hall, next door to the centre, and aims to encourage more people to have fun and get fit.

Councillor Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet for active and healthy lifestyles, said:

“Shrewsbury Sports Village provides excellent services to many people and I’m really pleased that it’s doing so well. This is largely down to the great range of activities available, and of course the dedicated staff who make it all possible.

“As well as welcoming a record number of visitors, the centre has been the driving force with a recent review of admin polices and procedures now being adopted by all council run leisure facilities across the county.”

Shrewsbury Sports Village is one of the five leisure facilities which the council is seeking bids from other leisure service providers to run. As part of a bold new approach to how the council delivers its services these new management arrangements could be in place as early as July 2012.
