Summer Season at Shrewsbury Library

An exciting summer of events is being held in Shrewsbury Library as part of the 2011 Shrewsbury Summer Season. 

The programme started on Saturday 11 June 2011 with tours of Shrewsbury Library and tea with ‘the headmaster’.

People attending had a guided tour of this fascinating building, which was previously the famous Shrewsbury School.  They heard about its history and saw behind the scenes, followed by tea and cake with ‘the headmaster’.  Members of staff were dressed in Victorian costume and the event was a prelude to the 1864 Shropshire Olympian Festival this weekend (17, 18 and 19 June 2011) in The Quarry.

Continuing the Victorian theme in celebration of the 1864 Olympics, on Friday 17 June 2011 at 2.30pm in the Hobbs Room at Shrewsbury Library, Gordon Dickins, well known local photographer and author of works on literary Shropshire, will give a talk about his enthusiasm for Victorian writing.

On Wednesday 20 July 2011 at 7.30pm in Shrewsbury Library, Katherine Swift, author of the acclaimed book “The Morville Hours”, which describes the birth and development of her garden at the Dower House in Morville, Shropshire, will talk about her new book, “The Morville Year”.

Councillor Mike Owen, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member, said:

“Shrewsbury Library is a truly fascinating place which is steeped in history.  Because of this, it offers the ideal setting for talks from inspiring people like Gordon and Katherine.”
