Roadshows to offer recycling advice

From Monday 20 to Sunday 26 June, Shropshire Council will be holding a series of waste and recycling events across the county to mark national Recycle Now Week.

The roadshow events will enable people to ask questions and get advice about recycling, composting, waste reduction and waste reuse.

The events are being run in partnership with the council’s waste contractor, Veolia Environmental Services, and volunteers from Shropshire’s Master Composters.

They are taking place as follows:

Monday 20 June: 10am-4pm; Shrewsbury Square
Wednesday 22 June: 9am – 3pm; Oswestry Market, Baileys Head
Friday 24 June: 9am – 3pm; Bridgnorth Market, High Street
Saturday 25 June: 11am-5pm: Meole Brace Science Day, Meole Brace School, Shrewsbury

Organised and funded by WRAP (the national Waste and Resources Action Programme) the theme for this year’s Recycle Now Week is ‘Recycling – Home and Away’.

The aim of the week is to raise more awareness about recycling to increase recycling rates and reduce the amount of rubbish which is sent to landfill.

It’s all about the positive cumulative effect we can make by recycling just a little bit more; whether it’s doing more of what we already do at home, or by starting to recycle at work or while out and about.

Councillor John Hurst-Knight, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for waste, said:

“Recycle Now Week is a great chance to remind people about the importance of recycling. Shropshire residents have done a great job by recycling over half of their rubbish but with the costs of landfill rising each year there is still more we can to reduce the rubbish we send to landfill which will help save money and the environment.”

There are still lots of easy little extra things we can all do to reduce the waste that goes to landfill, including:

• recycling glass jars as well as bottles;
• recycling aerosols and foil as well as cans;
• recycling things from upstairs as well as downstairs;
• reusing or donating items as well as recycling;
• recycling at school, work or whilst out and about as well as at home.
