Investing in the future of leisure services

A strategic framework to guide future investment in local leisure facilities will be discussed by Shropshire Council’s Cabinet on Wednesday 29 June 2011.

This framework is included as part of two strategies, the Indoor Leisure Facilities Strategy 2009–2019 and the Playing Pitch Strategy 2010–2020, which were put together following an extensive review of leisure services.

In a time when finances have to be carefully managed, this framework will ensure such investment is targeted against what is needed for local communities as they develop, both in size and demographically.

Any investment will be shaped to reflect the local community it serves, supporting the council’s approach to localism and by recognising that a ‘one size fits all approach’ is not an option going forward.

Once approved, the strategies will also provide the evidence base for the council to access future external funding streams for the facilities from funding bodies such as Sport England.

Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for leisure services, said:

“We are committed to providing excellent leisure facilities to our residents, within their local communities.

“We are mindful that the monies available in the public sector are reducing, therefore it’s important we use these strategies to help us to target any investment appropriately so that they best meet the needs and wants in their local communities they serve.  They will also provide a key platform for future funding from external bodies.”
