Closure of Hazledine Way in Shrewsbury
The eastbound section of Hazledine Way, between Meole Brace roundabout and Pritchard Way has been closed for safety reasons.
This closure follows a collapse of part of the pavement and road near the pedestrian crossing at the weekend (Sunday 5 June 2011).
Investigations and utility diversions are ongoing and results so far indicate that the collapse has been caused by an historic well beneath the road.
Our contractors will repair the hole as soon as possible. However, we expect that this section of road will remain closed for the next few days.
It is hoped that the repairs will be completed, and the road reopened, by Saturday evening (11 June) in time for the Elton John concert at the nearby Greenhous Meadow stadium on Sunday (12 June).
Repair work will involve:
– filling the hole with clean 40mm quarry stone.
– laying a 2m thick concrete slab over the hole to completely seal it.
– creating a new manhole, to be used for future monitoring/observation.
– laying a new road surface.
– relaying the pavement and repairing/replacing the kerbing.
Diversion route
Severn Trent’s contractors have re-opened a section of Wenlock Road which was previously closed, and through traffic will now be diverted from Meole Brace roundabout, eastbound along Oteley road to Weeping Cross island, and via Wenlock road, column roundabout and Haycock Way to Pritchard Way.
Access westbound along Hazledine Way (i.e. towards Meole Brace roundabout from Pritchard Way) remains unaffected.
