Shropshire Family Information Service on Twitter

Related topics: Community

A new Twitter page has been launched by Shropshire Council’s Family Information Service (FIS) for parents and carers of children and young people aged up to 19 years old.

Shropshire FIS helps parents and carers make the best use of childcare and children’s services.  Information and advice is being posted on Twitter on many aspects of family life, including things to do and places to go, healthy eating, staying safe, childcare and support for parents of children with disabilities.

Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member Aggie Caesar-Homden, said: “We are continually working to expand the ways that parents and carers can gain access to quality information, advice and support. As part of this we are keen to explore new technologies.

“Having this dedicated Twitter page means we can add to the variety of channels through which the Family Information Service is already available, and offer help to parents who prefer to use the Internet and social networking sites as a way of gathering information to support them in their role as parents.“

The Twitter page provides free, impartial information on options and possibilities that might otherwise remain unknown and therefore inaccessible to families, to ensure they have the opportunity to learn about, and benefit from the facilities available to them.

The FIS has been running for more than 11 years, and since it was launched in 2000 it has dealt with almost 60,000 enquiries from families.  The service was the first in the West Midlands to achieve the national Family First Award, which shows that the council delivers a quality service to families, in providing varied information, advice and assistance.

It is available through a telephone helpline, text service, face-to-face meetings and assistance and the Family Information Directory which is an online database featuring local and national organisations and services.
