Shropshire Council has been awarded £29,750 from the Environment Agency to help alleviate flooding from the River Severn to six properties in Bridgnorth and one property in Shrewsbury.

The properties will benefit from the money which will be used to carry out individual improvements to reduce the damage caused by river flooding. Plans include improving drainage, waterproofing brickwork and installing air brick covers, flood gates and flood guards.

Work is now being designed and scheduled, and is expected to be completed by March 2012.

Malcolm Price, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for transport, said:

“I am really pleased we have been successful in this funding and would like to thank the officers for their hard work in putting together this bid.  This money will go a long way to alleviate the effects of river flooding on these properties. There are a lot of ways people can protect their properties from flooding and it is hoped this scheme, in addition to the scheme for which we received funding last year, will further raise awareness.”
