Voting system referendum count

The Shropshire result of the UK-wide referendum on the voting system used for the election of MPs to Parliament is in.

The question put to voters on Thursday 5 May was: “At present, the UK uses the ‘first past the post’ system to elect MPs to the House of Commons.  Should the ‘alternative vote’ system be used instead?”

The turn-out in Shropshire was 42.15 per cent, and the result was:

Yes: 27,221 votes (28.4 per cent)

No: 68,732 votes (71.6 per cent)
