New pavement permit
Local traders will soon be able to make the most of the pavements outside their premises.
As from Friday 1 April 2011, traders will be able to apply to Shropshire Council for a new, affordable pavement permit which will allow them to use the pavements for tables and chairs or to display items for sale.
As well as giving a much-needed boost to trade, a simple application process will require traders to have public liability insurance. This is essential in case anyone was to hurt themselves whilst outside the premises.
Martin Taylor Smith, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for transport and IT, said:
“Introducing a new pavement permit would allow businesses to use the space outside their premises to expand or to encourage passing trade.
“A yearly fee of £50 for this permit would cover the costs of administering the scheme and would ensure that businesses would have the correct insurance. This is currently the responsibility of the taxpayer. The administration would be simple and quick, but would be separate from the planning and licensing processes.”
