Delay of road opening in Phoenix Bank

The proposed re-opening of the A529 road at Phoenix Bank in Market Drayton has been delayed by a fortnight until Friday 18 March.

Work to repair part of the wall which retains the Old Grammar School’s garden above the A529 road started on 10 January, when it was expected that the road would be closed for a period of up to eight weeks.

Unfortunately, when debris was removed from in front of the damaged wall, the damage was found to be more extensive than expected. The extended road closure is the result of the extra time required to carry out this additional repair.

Until the road is re-opened, local traffic will continue to be diverted along Shrewsbury Road, Dalelands Estate and Walkmill Road. In addition, signage is in place to intercept through traffic outside the town and divert it via the A53 and A41 roads.

Access along Phoenix Bank for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will remain available throughout the proposed work.

Martin Taylor-Smith, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for transport
and IT, said:

“It is appreciated that the extended road closure will cause inconvenience, and every reasonable effort will be made to re-open the road as soon as possible.”
