Market Drayton refurbished market to open
The newly refurbished Market Hall in Market Drayton is due to be re-opened for trade next Wednesday (9 February), with traders moving in from this
Sunday (6 February).
The refurbishment project, which has cost around £450,000, has involved gutting the building and providing traders with new units with new, up-to-date facilities.
The Market Hall is now equipped with heating, insulation, a new roof with roof lights that increase the light in the building, new lighting, toilet facilities – including a toilet for people with disabilities, an office for the council’s toll collector and a storage area for market waste.
The walls, floor and inside roof areas have new surfaces that give the Market Hall a light and bright new look.
The refurbishment work includes a unit opposite the Market Hall with an adjoining new retail unit that has consent for a range of uses.
Councillor Mike Owen, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for economy and waste, said:
“Shropshire Council is committed to investing in our market towns, and to supporting local businesses. This project shows a huge investment in Market Drayton and will provide a real boost to the market traders, and to local shoppers.”
David Minnery, a Shropshire Councillor for Market Drayton West, said:
“I am delighted that the new hall is finally ready for use; this is another important step in the continuing work to revitalise
the town.”
For the last twelve months the market traders have been located in temporary facilities in Cheshire Street. The new facilities available in the Market Hall will give them the opportunity to re-establish themselves as a premiere indoor market.
Consultations have taken place with traders over the last few months on their choice of units and facilities required. The units are slightly smaller than the original units due to the dividing walls and rear walls being insulated.
The scheme to refurbish the Market Hall was approved by the former North Shropshire District Council, prior to the formation of Shropshire Council.
