Mere Friends to air local literary talent
Friends of The Mere will be promoting local writing talent by staging a poetry and prose open mic fundraising event at The Boathouse, Ellesmere on Saturday 15 October 2011 at 7pm.
People are invited to bring along an original poem or piece of prose, and choose to read the poem themselves or elect for it to be read on their behalf.
The evening event will raise funds for Friends of The Mere, a local volunteer group supported by Shropshire Council, who help to promote and protect The Mere, Ellesmere through education, awareness and practical conservation projects.
Councillor Steve Charmley, Cabinet member for active and healthy lifestyles, said:
“It is great to see The Boathouse at The Mere expanding as a centre for creativity as well as hub for excellent dining and local information. The Friends of The Mere do a magnificent job in coming up with excellent ideas to support The Mere, and this event is a perfect example of that.”
Councillor Ann Hartley, Cabinet member for health and well-being and local Shropshire Councillor for Ellesmere Urban, said:
“We had a wonderful reading and poetry evening last year organised by library services. It is good to see the Friends of The Mere, hosting a similar event, highlighting the wealth of local talent and our fantastic local facility, The Boathouse.”
Professional writer and Friend of the Mere, Chris Hickman, said:
“There are many talented local writers who don’t get the chance to have their work aired. This evening will be a great opportunity to promote local talent as well as raising funds for worthwhile projects in the park.”
Tickets for the poetry and prose open mic are priced at £10 including supper, and are available from The Boathouse Visitor Information Centre on 01691 622981 or SPACE in Cross Street, Ellesmere on 01691 623241.
