Discovering the history of Shrewsbury’s drapers

Shrewsbury Drapers are celebrating their 550th anniversary in 2012.  In the lead up to this celebration, Shrewsbury Drapers and the Friends of Shropshire Archives have brought together a history day, celebrating the origins and success of the Drapers since 1462.

The day takes place at St Mary’s Church, Shrewsbury, on Sunday 2 October 2011.
The Friends of Shropshire Archives are a dedicated group of volunteers who provide invaluable support to Shropshire Council’s Shropshire Archives service, including organising regular history days such as this across the county.

The Shrewsbury Drapers Company was founded as a Guild by Royal Charter.  There are currently 80 elected Freemen of the Guild who are trustees for two charities which manage and support almshouses in Shrewsbury, and are actively involved in other charitable work.

The history day will explore various aspects of the history of the Shrewsbury Drapers Guild led by local experts and specialists.  Walks around Shrewsbury will reveal hidden aspects of the town’s history, and the importance of the cloth trade to its success.  In the afternoon there is also a rare opportunity to take tea with the Master of the Drapers Company, in the impressive surroundings of Drapers Hall.

Councillor Mike Owen, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for economic growth and prosperity, said:

“This event is a great opportunity to find out more about Shrewsbury’s history, and the key national economic contribution made by the town.  The continuity and evolution of the Shrewsbury Drapers Guild to what it is today, demonstrate that the Big Society has been going on for a while!”

The day costs £5 for members of the Friends of Shropshire Archives and £10 for non-members.  Tea at Drapers Hall is available for an additional £8.  Places are still available, for further details visit Shropshire Archives  and to book a place call Mrs Pat Kiernan on 01952 252814 or email patk1@blueyonder.co.uk.
