itea and biscuits week at Shrewsbury Library
Shrewsbury Library is hosting a free Internet introduction event later this month (Thursday 22 September 2011) to help older people who don’t currently use computers get connected.
The event, which will take place between 10am and midday, is being run in partnership with Age UK.
Councillor Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for library services, said:
“Around 10 million people in the UK still don’t use computers. This event provides an opportunity for people in later life to get a taste of the benefits that digital technologies such as computers and the Internet, mobile phone and digital cameras can really offer.
“Technology is a fantastic way for people to stay in touch whether living locally or abroad. Grandparents can keep up with family news and events and with webcams can even have face-to-face conversations.”
Andrew Bannerman, Shropshire Councillor for Quarry and Coton Hill, said:
“This is an excellent initiative, which will give confidence to many people who are currently unsure of the benefits of using a computer. It will also bring more people into our well-stocked and historically beautiful town centre library.”
Heather Williams from Age UK, said:
“This is a marvellous opportunity for older people to find out how computers can help them in their everyday lives.”
Age UK regularly run computer courses in partnership with Shropshire Libraries and people will be able to find out more on the day.
itea and biscuits week is being run by Age UK to encourage older people to discover the benefits of using computers.
Places are limited so people are being encouraged book as soon as possible by calling 01743 255308 or by dropping into Shrewsbury Library.
