Folklore and fiction on the Stiperstones

Related topics: Leisure, culture and heritage

On Sunday 14 August 2011 take a walk through the wild and beautiful Stiperstones in south Shropshire with Gordon Dickins, landscape photographer and writer, as part of the Friends of Shropshire Archives summer walks programme.

The Stiperstones is a magical area which has inspired a wide range of writers including Malcolm Saville, Mary Webb and DH Lawrence.  On the walk, participants will also learn about the rich folklore of the area, which casts a spell over many who visit it once, and are drawn back time and again.

The six-mile walk starts at the Bog Visitor Centre car park at 10.30am and will include some strenuous walking in hills and rough terrain.  Walkers are advised to bring a packed lunch and the walk will end mid afternoon – weather permitting.  The cost of the walk is £4, payable on the day.

The Friends of Shropshire Archives are a dedicated group of volunteers who provide invaluable support to Shropshire Council’s Shropshire Archives service, including organising regular events such as this across the county.
