Blog: Kerry Boyce talks about her volunteering work

To celebrate Volunteers Week we are publishing a series of stories from the public and staff who volunteer across the county.

Volunteers Week 2019

Today (Wednesday 5 June 2019) Kerry Boyce, Special Educational Needs (SEN) contract officer at Shropshire Council, tells us about her volunteering work.

I volunteer as an Activity Leader at my local churches (St John’s, Muxton and St Michaels, Lilleshall).

Up-to three times a year the church puts on Activity Days which are free of charge for 80+ children within the church radius. Last summer I did two lots of two days for over 50 young children between reception (or about to go to school – age 4) and Year 7 (11 years old).  The theme is based around something that the children enjoy: last year it was James Bond.

I took two groups of 10+ over the four-day period (two separate groups). There was a ‘guess who did it?’ room, arts and crafts like decorating a biscuit, assault courses, a treasure hunt, lots of singing and dancing, and some prayer/quiet time too.

This year it is three days for over 80 children, and I will be helping out in the summer holidays. I don’t use the allocated leave for volunteering as I work term-time only.

I also run the creche (“Light”) at St John’s Church on a Sunday for the age 0-6 range.
