Flooding guidance for developers

Shropshire Council is about to put in place a guidance document to help manage flood risk as part of new developments in the county.

The new guidance, which follows recent changes in legislation and the council’s new role as a Lead Local Flood Authority, will provide flood risk and drainage requirements for prospective developers to follow as part of the planning application process.

It will be considered by the council’s Cabinet on Wednesday 15 June 2011.

Councillor Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member, said:

“This guidance is essential to ensure that future developments to not result in an increase in flood risk.

“Periods of heavy rainfall are becoming more and more frequent, often causing widespread disruption. Therefore, it’s vital that we provide as much advice and support as possible to developers to ensure that people’s homes, businesses and our roads are protected.”

In time, this guidance will be replaced by a Water Supplementary Planning Document.
