Work starts on new school road safety scheme in Crowmoor in Shrewsbury

Work has started on a new road scheme in Shrewsbury which will make it safer for children getting to and from school.

The project involves introducing a new 20mph speed limit extending along Crowmere Road from the Crowmere roundabout, past Crowmoor and Belvidere schools, to the junction with Harcourt Crescent.

The new speed limit will be reinforced with traffic-calming measures, including raised plateaus at the Clive Road junction and outside Belvidere School.

Speed humps will be installed to encourage vehicles to slow down, and engineers will take the opportunity to undertake essential highway and footway maintenance to avoid any further disruption in the near future.

Improvements will also be made to the streetlighting in the area.

Work started on Monday 21 July 2014 and is due to be completed by the end of August 2014 in readiness for the start of the new school term in September.

The project will be supervised and constructed by Shropshire Council’s term consultant and contractor respectively, Mouchel and Ringway.

Claire Wild, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for higways and transport, said:

“Extensive consultation was carried out on these proposals and we received lots of supportive feedback, so I hope people will appreciate why this work is taking place.

“We apologise for any inconvenience while the work takes place, and our contractors will do their utmost to minimise any disruption and to complete the work ahead of schedule if at all possible.”

Signs warning of the forthcoming roadworks have been put in place and letters have been sent to residents and businesses in the area to give them information about the project.
