“Day of Action” in Meole Brace, Shrewsbury next Wednesday
A “Day of Action” is happening in Meole Brace, Shrewsbury on Wednesday 23 July 2014 between 10am – 4pm on Meole Estate. This will be the second Day of Action to take place in Shrewsbury, and the main area of activity will be the recreation ground at Mary Webb Road.
The Day of Action is an idea that was initiated by the Shrewsbury Crime and Disorder Partnership’s Bronze Level Tasking, which meets on a monthly basis to work jointly on solutions to crime and anti-social behaviour across the town.
The concept behind the Day of Action is that partners like West Mercia Police, Severnside Housing, Shrewsbury Town Council and Shropshire Council work together on one day, in a high profile and highly visible way, to make a positive impact on a locality. Actions taking place on the day will include traffic enforcement, community litter pick, a tidy up of the BMX track, as well as arts and crafts for children and young people led by the Youth Service and Scrappies. Light refreshments, kindly donated by Sainsbury’s and Starbucks, will be available on the day.
Inspector Graham Preece, Bronze Level Tasking Chair, said:
“The Day of Action is about working in partnership to address community safety issues in the streets of Shrewsbury. It is a rolling program that will move on to a different Safer Neighbourhood Team area every two months. An event will have been held in each of the areas across Shrewsbury and central Shropshire.
“Senior representatives of each agency involved will also take part in a web chat starting at 6pm, and I would actively encourage residents of Meole Brace and the wider area to engage with us, via http://www.westmercia.police.uk/webchat/.”
Gwilym Butler, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for community engagement, added:
“Day of Action events are all about community engagement and working with local people to help make their communities safer and vibrant places to live. I really encourage residents to join the Day of Action and get involved.”
Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for public protection, also commented:
“We know crime and anti-social behaviour can have an impact on how safe and secure people feel and, as a partnership, we are committed to tackling it. Day of Action events are one of a number of ongoing measures and initiatives we support to identify and help tackle such issues in local communities.”
