Shropshire Council’s museums and archives services Heritage Lottery-funded project, “Volunteering for Shropshire’s Heritage” is pleased to announce a very special event being held on Saturday 26 April 2014 at Shirehall in Shrewsbury.  “Discover Shropshire Day” will be an opportunity to investigate any manner of things relating to Shropshire’s heritage.

There will be presentations relating to:

  • The history of Shrewsbury Town FC
  • Shropshire War Memorials
  • Fulke Greville, Shrewsbury and Elizabethan education
  • The Great War and Albrighton
  • The historical significance of the Shropshire peatlands
  • The Shropshire Historic Churches Trust
  • The Friends of Ironbridge Gorge Museum.

Shropshire Archives, in conjunction with FindMyPast, will be launching the online parish registers for the county, and there will be an opportunity to find out all about the Arts Council-funded project, Shropshire’s Heritage HeroesAs if that weren’t enough, local heritage organisations from all around the county will be in attendance, alongside representatives of museums, libraries and archives, and there will be plentiful opportunities to hear what these different organisations do, what they can do for you and, maybe, what you can do for them.  There will be some live music and sandwiches, and light refreshments will be available too.

Tina Woodward, Shropshire Council’s deputy Cabinet member for business growth, said:

“Shropshire’s heritage is quite outstanding, and there’s such a rich diversity of activities, knowledge and interests involved, that only rarely does the opportunity come along for many of these to be represented at a single event.  Discover Shropshire Day should showcase just how fabulous Shropshire’s archival, museum and printed heritage is but, just as importantly, will demonstrate what it means to the county’s people.  It will be about a sense of place, community identity and the people who live in that place and are part of that community.  If you like Shropshire, you’ll love Discover Shropshire Day.”

We’d love to see you at Shirehall on Saturday 26 April, where Discover Shropshire Day will run from 10.30am – 4pm.  Admission is free and there’s no need to book.  If you’d like more information, please don’t hesitate to call 01743 255377 or email john.benson@shropshire.gov.uk.  There’ll be ongoing information about the event available at www.facebook.com/ShropshireArchives and www.volunteeringshropshiresheritage.wordpress.com.
