Mud on the roads danger
The Safer Roads Partnership, and West Mercia Police are reminding motorists to drive carefully on rural roads this weekend, after numerous reports of mud on the roads across Shropshire and other counties.
Agriculture is one of the key industries within our area, and harvesting a wide variety of crops at this time of the year sees an increase in agricultural vehicles on the road. However, this brings with it an increased potential for road collisions, and police officers have dealt with a number of dangerous situations recently caused by mud being left on the roads.
Anna Higgins, Communications Manager at the Safer Roads Partnership, said:
“We’re advising all motorists to take extra care on rural roads at the moment during the late harvest season.
“Excess mud is a danger to cars, motorbikes and cyclists, can change the way a vehicle handles, and can cause skidding, especially in wet conditions.
“If you see a ‘mud on road’ sign please take this seriously, drive with caution and treat this the same way that you would with icy or slippery roads.”
Under the Highways Act, farmers and contractors have a duty to ensure that their vehicles are cleared of any mud or debris before entering onto the highway, and police have warned farmers that they will not hesitate to take legal action against those who are not complying.
Chief Inspector Adam Thomas said:
“While some farmers take steps to make sure they keep the roads clear and safe, not all are as diligent, so this year we have done a lot of work to remind farmers of their responsibilities and liabilities under the Highways Act.
“However, we are still receiving dozens of calls from the public about hazardous driving conditions caused by mud being left on the road and I am worried that someone could be killed. Therefore we are taking a tough stance on the issue: response officers are patrolling looking for problems, and they will not hesitate in taking action against anyone they believe is being irresponsible and reckless.”
Any drivers of agricultural vehicles or anyone wishing to report any issues regarding debris or mud on the road can contact Shropshire Council on 0345 678 9006.
