Route revealed as the Birmingham 2022 The Queen’s Baton Relay comes to Bridgnorth
Excitement is building as Bridgnorth prepares to host the Birmingham 2022 The Queen’s Baton Relay on Saturday 23 July 2022.
People wanting to cheer the Batonbearers as The Queen’s Baton Relay makes its way across the town now have the first glimpse of the route it will take.
Severn Valley Railway will deliver the Baton to the town. It will travel along the line from Kidderminster, hauled by No. 70 “Elizabeth II” the steam locomotive recently painted purple and silver to commemorate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
After a private photo call at the railway, the Baton will make its way over the bridge onto New Road and then to Underhill Street.
Once it crosses the River Severn the Baton will follow Mill Street, onto the A442 and then into Severn Park, where Shropshire Council, Bridgnorth Town Council, Energize Shropshire Telford & Wrekin and Sporting Bridgnorth are supporting a celebration of sports and wellbeing from 10am to 3pm.
There, visitors will be able to watch The Queen’s Baton Relay as it makes a loop of the park in support of sports clubs and wellbeing organisations offering taster sessions of their activities.
The Queen’s Baton Relay will also experience the historic Bridgnorth Cliff Railway as part of its journey through the town, travelling up and down and pausing for a photo call.
Cecilia Motley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for communities, culture, leisure and tourism, and transport, said:-
“The Queen’s Baton Relay promises to be quite a spectacle as it travels through the town and it will be a great event for people to line the streets and cheer it on.”
Sarah Barlow, Bridgnorth Town Mayor, said:-
“I am delighted that Bridgnorth will welcome The Queen’s Baton Relay in July. It is a great honour and privilege that grants us the opportunity to celebrate the Commonwealth Games coming to Birmingham and the many sporting stars and achievements we hold in not only Bridgnorth, but the whole of Shropshire.
“We hope that the people of Bridgnorth will join us on the day to cheer on the Batonbearers and celebrate sport and wellbeing in Bridgnorth at our community sports day on Severn Park.”
People are being advised that there will be some road closures as The Queen’s Baton Relay travels through town: more details such as timings and advice will follow.
