Shropshire’s The Queen’s Green Canopy campaign has been given a huge boost thanks to a generous legacy from the late Richard Mayall and his wife Anne, who lived near Harmer Hill.

Anyone in the county wishing to plant a tree at home as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy can either buy and plant their own choice of tree or collect a tree for free, together with a stake and tie, from Shrewsbury Town Council’s Weeping Cross Nursery, SY5 6HT or Prees Heath Nursery, Whitchurch, SY13 2HR. Please reserve your free tree, while stocks last, by filling in the simple form on Shrewsbury Town Council’s website.

The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a national project that the Shropshire Lieutenancy, together with Shropshire Council and Telford and Wrekin Council, are supporting locally. It has been rolled out across Shropshire and the rest of the UK during the planting season from October 2021 to December 2022.  This will be a longlasting and valuable way to mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. The Lieutenancy and the councils are keen to help ensure that as many trees as possible are planted for the Canopy in Shropshire.

This initiative will promote the importance of trees for the environment in a sustainable and relevant way and, it is hoped, thousands of trees will be planted across the county as a lasting legacy. Each planting can be commemorated by marking it on the map on the Queen’s Green Canopy website https://queensgreencanopy.org/map-education-hub/qgc-map/#/
