Treat yourself to Books Aloud this autumn from Shropshire Libraries
Shropshire Libraries is to relaunch its popular Time to Listen groups for adults as ‘Books Aloud’ this autumn.
The new name reflects the simple but enjoyable offer; adults can drop in to their local monthly group, pull up a chair and relax while staff and volunteers read extracts from fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Readings are expertly selected on entertaining and thought-provoking themes, with sessions such as Back to School, Courage, and Whatever the Weather, set to feature in the months ahead.
Books Aloud groups offer the ideal opportunity to meet others in an easy-going environment and enjoy some gentle mental stimulation in a relaxed way. Regular members find many benefits in coming along, commenting, “You spark our imaginations and curiosity” and “It enhances your well-being, really; you drop a bit of your own stuff – it lifts you.”
For some members, the opportunity to share a little conversation is a big attraction, while others find that they’re introduced to books they might not have come across otherwise. It’s also a sociable and accessible event for those with sight loss. For all, there’s a special magic in simply sitting back and being read to.
Lezley Picton, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for culture and leisure, said,
“Connecting with others in informal but stimulating ways is so beneficial for well-being and Books Aloud is a great example of this. I’d urge people to drop in to sample a session or try out one of the many free, enjoyable daytime activities on offer for adults in our libraries.”
All Books Aloud groups last for an hour, are free to attend and there’s no need to book ahead. Monthly groups currently take place at Bridgnorth, Whitchurch, Ellesmere and Gobowen libraries, while a fortnightly group is offered at Oswestry Library, as well as a quarterly group (Llyfrau Llafar) in the Welsh language.
