‘We believe in better food’

In today’s society and with the pressures of busy, modern day life, it can often be difficult to make healthier choices. Many people still find it difficult to eat healthily in an environment where less than healthy food and drink is often the default option.

The increasing consumption of ‘food on the go’, that is often cheap, readily available at all times of the day, and often high in fat, sugar or salt, has been identified as one of the biggest risk factors to our health.

Food4Health, from Shropshire Council’s Help2Change team, aims to support people to make healthier food and drink choices. A range of specially-selected foods and drinks, made with 100% natural ingredients, will be available initially through vending machines at three Shropshire libraries in Oswestry, Shrewsbury and Ludlow from Wednesday 18 July 2018.

Kevin Lewis, Help2Change director, said:-

“We are what we eat, but being surrounded by junk food makes it hard to have a healthy diet. Shropshire Council believes in better food. By launching Food4Health and vending healthy snacks, we are making it easier for people to make the right choices.”

Lee Chapman, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for adult services, health and social housing, added:-

“While not all fast food is unhealthy, it is typically higher in salt, calories and saturated fat – these can cause serious health problems when consumed too often and in large quantities.

“By creating healthier environments, and supporting people in making healthier choices, we can play an important role in tackling obesity and the associated health inequalities.”
