Discover in a Day Arts Award at Oswestry Library on 10 March
Shropshire Libraries is working with an Oswestry primary school on an exciting arts project made possible with local funding. 28 students from Holy Trinity Primary School’s Year 4 will take part in the first Arts Award offered in Oswestry Library, on Thursday 10 March 2016.
The students will spend the day in the library working with professional poets and storytellers. The day has been structured so that the students will gain Arts Award Discover level certificate.
Arts Award unique qualifications support young people to develop as artists and arts leaders. The programme develops their creativity, leadership and communication skills.
Open to anyone aged up to 25, Arts Award embraces all interests and backgrounds. Through working towards an award young people learn to work independently, helping them to prepare for further education and employment.
Annabel Gittins, one of Shropshire Council’s library managers for children and young people, said:-
“Arts Award is proven to develop confidence within children. We value each child’s contribution, and by displaying their created ‘poet-tree’ in the library during Oswestry Litfest, we are reinforcing this to the children and their families.”
Stuart West, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for leisure and culture, said:-
“This day is a great demonstration of how libraries and schools can work together to enhance the educational experience of children.”
The library was able to offer this Discover Award to Holy Trinity through the generosity of the Mary Hignett Bequest Fund, administered by the Rotary Club of Oswestry and the Friends of Oswestry Library.
