Arts Council England visited Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery yesterday [03/03/2015] as part of the application for accreditation from the Shropshire Museum Service.

Under the Arts Council’s Museum Accreditation scheme, renewal applications can require a routine site visit as part of the process to maintain status.

Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery opened in April 2014 and the current ‘Secret Egypt’ exhibition attracted over 2,250 visitors over the half term period. A new temporary exhibition dedicated to Shrewsbury’s railway heritage has also recently opened.

Tina Woodward, Shropshire Council Deputy Cabinet member responsible for museums, said:

“The Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery has been open for just under a year now and it has been an exciting journey for all involved. The temporary exhibitions space has provided the Museum Service with the appropriate space to host three wonderful exhibitions such as Secret Egypt and it is always a real pleasure to host local exhibitions. The feedback to date has been very positive from visitors. It is lovely to see the old buildings brought back to life and being enjoyed by so many visitors including schools groups.

“Across the Museums Service we are acutely aware of the importance of accreditation status and this is a key priority. There is a huge amount of work which goes on behind the scenes by a relatively small Museums Team with the very welcome assistance of our volunteers and Friends Groups.”
