Have you lost your dog?

Shropshire Council’s dog warden service is keen to remind people who have lost their dog to report it to them after a number of dogs remain unclaimed.

Amongst their other duties, the council’s two dog wardens regularly patrol the county and collect stray dogs, 24 hours a day. These dogs are always checked against any reports of those lost and scanned for their microchip. As a result many are happily reunited with their owners. However, some of those without a collar (a legal requirement) or microchip are sadly never claimed.

Councillor Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for the dog warden service, said:

“Dogs should not be out on their own in the street or other public place at any time. As a dog owner you are responsible for ensuring that your dog is kept under control and does not cause a nuisance or danger to other people.

“However, no matter how careful you are to make sure that your dog can’t wander off or get out, even the most obedient and well-guarded dog can go missing sometimes.

“By law your dog must wear a collar and tag with your name and address on it whenever it is out in public. It is also a good idea to have your telephone number on it. “We will always try and match any lost dog reports we receive with the strays we find.”

The council is working with the Dogs Trust to promote micro chipping in the south of the county. This means that people in this area can have their dogs chipped for free. For further information about this scheme please call the council’s customer service centre.
