People advised on the importance of keeping Shrewsbury tidy
Shropshire Council’s Love Where you Live campaign launch in Shrewsbury earlier this week (Wednesday 12 June) was a huge success, with lots of people of all ages advised on the importance of keeping the place in which they live tidy and litter free.
Although the campaign is primarily an educational one, four Environmental Crime Reports were handed out to people who dropped their litter. While three of these will serve as a warning, one will be followed up with a Fixed Penalty Notice.
The council’s environmental maintenance and public protection teams focused their efforts on the route from Pride Hill to the Shrewsbury Sixth Form College. On the day, sprayed green footprints led to six bins with banners on, encouraging people to put their litter, chewing gum and cigarette butts in them.
Councillor Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member responsible for street scene, said:
“Through the Love Where you Live campaign we are keen to encourage people to have pride in their local community and therefore not drop litter.
“While education is our main focus, people who drop litter will be warned and if they don’t take heed they can expect to receive a Fixed Penalty Notice which is around £75, but can be up to £2,500.”
All of this is part of their new ‘Love Where you Live’ campaign led by Education and Enforcement Officer, Gillian Denning and is just one of lots of initiatives taking place across the county to highlight the benefits that preventing litter, fly-tipping and dog fouling can achieve.
