Support available for farmers in dealing with difficulties caused by severe weather

Shropshire Council is working with farmers to offer support in dealing with some of the extreme difficulties caused by the prolonged winter weather.

The bad weather has been a severe blow to British farmers, making it extremely difficult for many to dispose of animal carcasses.

As a result the Government has temporarily relaxed controls on fallen stock in parts of the country which are most badly affected, including Shropshire.

Where exceptionally bad weather makes it difficult to get carcasses to a collection vehicle, the Government is allowing farmers to bury or burn carcasses on farmland.

Any farmers facing difficulties in getting fallen stock carcasses to a collection vehicle for removal for offsite disposal are urged to contact Shropshire Council for advice and support.

Officers can discuss alternate methods of disposal and the help available in dealing with these difficult circumstances.

Martin Key, Shropshire Council’s healthier and sustainable environment service manager, said:

“This winter has now been one of the most prolonged in recent years, with persistent low temperatures.

“It is placing many farmers under immense strain at their busiest time of year, Easter being a peak time for many livestock farmers with the lambing season; and we welcome the exceptions being made by the Government.

“We are a rural county, and we are continually working to support our farming community. At this difficult time, we want to make sure that farmers are aware that we are on hand to help with advice on the relaxation of the controls on fallen stock, different methods of disposal and the further support available.

“Farmers can call us on 01743 254101 to discuss their circumstances and how we can help.”
