The new cricket pavilion in Calverhall opened its doors to the local community on Sunday (12 August 2012), made possible by 18 months of fundraising, funding from the Northern Marches Leader Programme, plus £34,583 from Shropshire Council’s Market Towns Revitalisation Programme.

With just a few internal jobs now left to complete, the building will provide a place where young people can get involved in many different sports.

The pavilion was open throughout the day on Sunday and a special ribbon cutting ceremony took place at 12.30pm.

The day also featured a cricket tournament.  Four teams, made up of three local people representing the builders who completed the building, a veterinary practice from Whitchurch, local villagers, and the cricket club, played 12 overs.  Alongside this there was a rounders match organised by the new club, a bouncy castle for children, and a barbeque.

John Hurst-Knight, Shropshire Council’s deputy Cabinet member, said:

“I’m pleased that the funding from the Market Towns Revitalisation Programme was able to give this worthwhile scheme a much-needed boost and I am sure it will be well used by many.”
