Gobowen, Selattyn, St Martins and Weston Rhyn Local Joint Committee (LJC) agreed to allocate £987 to four projects that were organised to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The events took place in Ifton Meadows, City Lane in Hengoed, Bronygarth and Weston Rhyn, arranged by local groups, and all encouraged a sense of pride and community spirit.

As a legacy to the Jubilee, groups planted wild bulbs and trees.

Following the last LJC meeting in February 2012, groups were encouraged to come forward with requests to support activities and street parties because it was felt that they would be beneficial to promote all the good work in the area.

The deadline for groups to apply for other funding is Friday 22 June 2012, and these will be discussed and put forward for approval at the next meeting to be held at St John’s Church, Weston Rhyn, on Tuesday 17 July 2012 at 7pm.

Councillor David Lloyd, Chairman of Gobowen, Selattyn, St Martins and Weston Rhyn LJC, said:-

”It was pleasing to see that six groups within our area applied for funding, and we have supported the events.  It was encouraging to see this level of interest, and the Jubilee was also marked with the lighting of the beacon on the racecourse.  Our achievements in the area are very rewarding, and I can confirm that following the completion of the zebra crossing in Gobowen, Shropshire Council’s highways team managed the installation of the crossing within their budget and ahead of schedule.  This will mean that they do not need to claim all of the £5,000 that was allocated as contingency for the project.  News of this kind is both pleasing and challenging, as it means our budget this year will be in the region of £21,000.  I am sure we can work together and ensure this is spent wisely on a variety of projects.”
