Don’t let your Christmas tree go to waste

Shropshire Council and its waste contractor Veolia are reminding residents that they can still recycle their Christmas trees by putting them out for collection alongside their garden waste or taking them to their nearest household recycling centre. 

All real Christmas trees collected will get sent for composting and turned into valuable soil improver for local farmers. 

To benefit from the kerbside collection service trees should be placed, if possible, inside the garden waste bin.  However, if they won’t fit, residents can leave their trees by the side of their bin. 

Large trees should be cut into five foot (1.5 metre) lengths to make it easier for the crew to collect them. 

Councillor Mike Owen, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for waste and recycling, said:

“In the UK we get through 8 million real Christmas trees every year. 

“As such we estimate there are around 40,000 dead Christmas trees left over in the Shropshire Council area alone.  Please don’t let them go to waste.”
