New payment bands at two Shrewsbury car parks
Drivers now have more flexibility to pay less for parking after the pricing bands changed at two town centre car parks in Shrewsbury.
The pricing at Raven Meadows multi-storey and The Strand (the surface car park just off Raven Meadows) have changed, with new bands which allow people to pay for each hour they park up to six hours, rather than the previous bands that started at £1.50 for one hour and then jumped to £3.50 for between one and three hours.
The new pricing structure includes the introduction of a two-hour tariff, after Shropshire Council listened to the views of customers and town businesses, who said more flexible timing bands would encourage people to spend as much time as they needed shopping, rather than having to rush back to the car to avoid paying a higher charge.
As with all council-run car parks in Shrewsbury, the charges apply from 8am to 6pm, so it is free to park after 6pm.
Prices at the Raven Meadows and The Strand car parks are now as follows (from Monday 3 October 2011):
Up to one hour: £1.50
Up to two hours: £2.50
Up to three hours: £3.50
Up to four hours: £4.00
Up to five hours: £5.00
Up to six hours: £6.00
Up to 10 hours: £8.00
Councillor Simon Jones, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for parking, said:
“We are continuing to do what we can to encourage shoppers into Shrewsbury town centre. Adding more pricing bands at these car parks makes it simpler and fairer for drivers, so you effectively pay for what you get rather than being charged for parking time that you don’t need.
“We are listening to what people are telling us, and we will keep looking at ways of making parking charges as fair as possible.”
