Council congratulates Shropshire businessman on Queen’s Award

A Shropshire businessman who has been instrumental in promoting enterprise growth in the county has been honoured with a prestigious Queen’s Award.

Dr Geoffrey Davies OBE, managing director of Alamo Group and chairman of the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership, has been given the Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion.  He was presented with the award at a reception in London recently.

The award is aimed at people who play a significant role in promoting enterprise skills and encourage entrepreneurial attitudes in others in the UK.  It is for people who:

  • Give up their time – and sometimes provide financial support – to help potential entrepreneurs in education or in the early phases of business development.
  • Work in education, training or youth work and help provide others with enterprise skills.
  • Are involved in social enterprise and either achieve business outcomes or help others develop business skills.

The awards are made annually by The Queen, and are only given to 10 individuals for the highest levels of excellence demonstrated in each category.

Shropshire Council’s chief executive, Kim Ryley, nominated Dr Davies for the award, and the council’s cabinet member for economic growth and prosperity, Councillor Mike Owen, said it was well deserved.

Councillor Owen said:

“Geoffrey Davies has worked tremendously hard to promote and encourage Shropshire businesses, both as chairman of the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership and in his capacity as founding chairman of Shropshire Business Board.  I would like to offer my hearty congratulations to him on this wonderful achievement.”

Geoffrey Davies said:

“I am very honoured to receive this prestigious award and it’s very humbling to find that my name was put forward by one’s peers.

“I have always had an interest in lifelong learning and business.  It is such a privilege to be able to lend a hand to support young people with their studies and help fledgling businesses develop, for they are the real entrepreneurs of the future which our county and country desperately need.”
