Shropshire Council is celebrating the renewal of Shropshire’s status as a Fairtrade county.

The council has been working with Shropshire Fairtrade Coalition to help them secure Fairtrade status for the county – and the successful renewal of this status was recently announced by the Fairtrade Foundation.

Councillor Ann Hartley, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for energy and carbon reduction, said

“Every time we buy Fairtrade products, we are taking a small step in helping to reduce the imbalance between the developed world and developing countries. We are pleased that sales of Fairtrade goods in Shropshire are growing month-on-month, as we all realise that by making the purchase of Fairtrade goods a regular habit we really can make a difference. We are delighted that Shropshire has had its Fairtrade Status renewed in 2011, and would like to encourage Shropshire shoppers to continuing their support.”

Ruth Hudson, Sustainability Officer with Shropshire Council, said:

“Fairtrade status is not easy to achieve and retain, and is only given when a number of strict criteria have been met. These include endorsement by the local authorities, the wide availability of Fairtrade goods in local shops and cafes, and good media coverage of Fairtrade issues. It is also important to note that supporting Fairtrade means that the producers can live more sustainably, do not use harmful chemicals to grow the products, and can invest in systems that address climate change issues.”

To help celebrate the renewal of Shropshire’s Fairtrade status, on Tuesday 8 March there will be a Fairtrade stall in the Column Restaurant at Shirehall selling a range of Fairtrade products. There will also be an opportunity to help the council to create the longest line of Fairtrade bunting!

The event will take place as part of Fairtrade Fortnight, which runs from 26 February to 13 March.
